A READER has brought in a very special newspaper – a 1974 issue of the Lytham St Annes Express, which focused on St Annes on Sea Land and Building Company's centenary.
Centre page stories, 'Preparing for the St Annes of the Future' and 'When royalty comes to town' emphasise differences between St Annes then, and St Annes now.
'Preparing St Annes for the Future' remembers a collection of postcards dating from the turn of the century, in the heyday of the town's prosperity as a tourist resort.
One postcard, written in July, 1909, bears a half-penny stamp of Edward VII's reign and shows the pier and the beach at that time.
The article also states how the growing awareness of St Annes among visitors caused "anxieties" with locals, as it meant sharing a civil pride and altering the existing townscape. Great emphasis was placed upon the town's pier and period charm.
In another article, 'A vision that came true', St Annes' strong residential elements and shopping centres are highlighted, although it is stated that "change will no doubt come from the town centre and old fine buildings".
The second article discusses the amount of Royal attention St Annes once received, and focuses on the then forthcoming visit by Princess Anne.
It also speaks of the Duke of Edinburgh, along with Princess Margaret and the Duchess of Kent, all of whom have visited St Annes.
The article states practically every top footballer has stayed in the town, training on the sands and often visiting the swimming baths.
The world's best golfers have been to the town, too, one of the most famous moments being when Great Britain played the USA at Royal Lytham and St Annes in 1961, in the Ryder Cup.

The full article contains 301 words and appears in n/a newspaper.
