A FORMER Lytham St Annes Express newspaperman turned back the clock for us this week when he popped into our offices with photographs of the royal visit to the town by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1938.

Ronald Whiteside, now 82, was just a young school lad at the time – but he can still recall the visit, and remember his father James meeting the royal couple.
Ronald, who lives with his wife Kathleen, 78, in Bowness Avenue, St Annes, worked at the Express for 47 years, starting out as an apprentice compositor.
His father served with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in World War One and lost part of an arm.
The king and queen met local disabled ex-servicemen from the war during their visit at the pier head, including James.
James is pictured (right) talking to the king.
"I was at school at Lytham Endowed at the time. I think we all paraded in the street," said Ronald
"I've got a flag I was waving.
"That picture was at the pier head. While they were here the king and queen spoke to disabled ex-servicemen from the First World War."
James, who was a member of Lytham Ex-Servicemen's Club, died in 1952. Ronald also brought in this photograph of his father having a pint with a friend.
