UNITED we stand . . .
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is bringing his Premier and Champions League double winners to town.
Fergie made the pledged to a shocked Mick Fuller, the AFC Fylde manager, at the weekend.
FA Vase holders AFC Fylde are now set to line up against United next summer in a prestige pre-season friendly.
The offer came straight from Sir Alex himself at the star-studded Football Writers Association dinner at Manchester's Radison Edwardian Hotel on Sunday.
Ferguson paid tribute to Fuller for his achievements before making the shock announcement and Fuller was lost for words.
"I was astounded when he turned round and he offered us a friendly," he said.
"I joked that we were looking for a friendly when I picked up my award earlier on, but it goes to show that if you don't ask you don't get.
"I spoke to him after the event to thank him. I really didn't expect it, but we are now in contact with Manchester United.
"it's a fabulous gesture by Sir Alex for this football club and it's something for us all to look forward to."
Fuller was presented with his Football Writers Award alongside the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson.
The dinner is held annually by the FWA to mark the Northern managers' football achievements.
Other managers collecting awards included Tony Pulis, Phil Brown and Jim Gannon.
Fuller added: "The FWA chairman Steve Bates invited the club which was a shock in itself, but it's put the club on the map and I have to say all the managers and leading sports journalists present made us feel very welcome.
"It was a fantastic occasion which I'll never forget"
