AN African children's education charity has received a cash boost from Lytham St Annes High School.
The school has raised more than £1,000 for the Children of Watamu fund.
A cheque for £1,094.59 was handed over by students Charlotte and Louise Anderton – the motivators – to Sue Heyward who launched the charity.
The money was raised by non-uniform days and donations to sponsor animals to be used by the people of Watamu, Kenya.
It will be used to sponsor half of the school fees for secondary children for a year's education.
Sue Heyward set up the charity after she was on holiday in Kenya and saw the children sitting outside for their lessons in the hot sun.
She has built a primary and secondary school and is in the process of building an orphanage, plus helping in other ways
Lytham High will send 20 Sixth-formers on a 10-day trip to Watamu after the AS exams finish.
The plan is to create a network of students who will help to sustain the fundraising well in to the future.
Initially they will work in the Watamu school, team-teaching, observing and working within the curriculum.
They will build up relationships with the students there and set up e-mail links.
It is hoped that the trip will become an annual event. If anyone would like to get involved in sponsoring the students, they can get in touch with the school.
Deputy head, Cherry Ridgeway, who is leading the students, visit, said: "We are proud to be involved in something which is so worthwhile."
